What you need to know when buying Laguiole
How to Choose Genuine Laguiole Cutlery
When buying Laguiole cutlery, it’s important to understand
exactly what the name Laguiole represents — and what it doesn’t. Whether you are buying your first set of Laguiole cutlery or adding to your existing collection.
Laguiole Is a Style, Not a Brand
Laguiole is not a single brand or manufacturer. The name
refers to a distinctive style of cutlery that originated in the small
village of Laguiole, in the Aubrac region of France.
Unlike many well-known cutlery brands, Laguiole is not
trademark protected. There is no single governing body or legal definition
that dictates what a Laguiole knife or fork must be. As a result, the name Laguiole
on its own does not guarantee quality, origin, or authenticity.
Who Makes Laguiole Cutlery?
Today, Laguiole-style cutlery is produced by many
different manufacturers, ranging from small French workshops to large
overseas factories. As with many heritage or luxury designs, the Laguiole style
has been widely copied.
This means that a significant amount of Laguiole cutlery
sold worldwide is manufactured outside of France, commonly in China or
Pakistan. While these products may visually resemble traditional Laguiole
designs, they differ greatly in terms of materials, craftsmanship, and
finishing quality.
What Is Considered “Genuine” Laguiole?
Laguiole cutlery is generally considered genuine when
it is:
- 100%made in France
- Produced using traditional manufacturing methods
- Made by an established French cutlery maker
French-made Laguiole cutlery reflects generations of
savoir-faire, combining skilled workmanship with carefully selected materials.
How Can I Tell If Laguiole Cutlery Is Made in France?
One of the most reliable indicators is the presence of a maker’s
stamp or manufacturer’s name on the cutlery itself. Reputable French
manufacturers are proud to put their name to their work.
